Most people start to grow in their wisdom teeth around ages 18 and 24. However, these final molars aren’t typically necessary and they can sometimes lead to oral health issues in the long run, so it’s normal for most patients to get them removed. Once you’ve finished your procedure, you’ll need to get plenty of rest for the best possible recovery. That said, this can be quite challenging for some patients. Keep reading to learn a few tips to rest well after undergoing wisdom tooth extractions.
Tip #1: Position Yourself Properly for Sleeping
First and foremost, you’ll need to keep your head elevated for the first 24 hours after completing your procedure. Doing so will help prevent too much circulation to the surgical site, significantly minimizing inflammation and encouraging the formation of the blood clot. If you use gauze pads, make sure to have someone watch over you as you rest so that you don’t end up accidentally choking on them. Have them wake you up every 20 minutes to check your gauze and switch it out with a clean one if needed.
Tip #2: Take Pain Relievers When Necessary
Since wisdom tooth extractions involve oral surgery, it’s natural to feel some discomfort after undergoing the procedure. Without the proper steps to manage this, it can be difficult to get enough sleep. Be sure to take over-the-counter or prescribed pain medications as instructed. You should also use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to keep the area numb and reduce swelling.
Tip #3: Stick to Your Dentist’s Aftercare Guidelines
During your recovery, you’ll want to stick to drinking water and eating healthy food per your dentist’s instructions. Your meals should consist of soft options, such as applesauce, yogurt, pudding, and mashed potatoes, at least for the first 24 hours. You’ll also need to avoid using a straw, as the suction can end up ruining the blood clot that needs to form around the surgical site, which can lead to discomfort and even complications like dry socket. Refrain from brushing around the area, rinsing, and spitting until you’ve sufficiently recovered.
Tip #4: Watch Out for Severe Warning Signs
Have you started noticing unusual or severe discomfort during your healing process? Does it persist even after taking painkillers or using a cold compress? If so, you’ll need to visit your dentist for help as quickly as possible. If there’s excessive bleeding or inflammation, it could be an indication of an infection, so you’ll want to get this resolved sooner rather than later.
Having plenty of rest is crucial for healing after your wisdom tooth extraction. Keep these tips in mind and reach out to your dentist if necessary, and you should be able to recover without little to no problems!
