Do you know someone who appears much older than they really are? Do they always look tired? If so, it may be that they’re suffering from untreated sleep apnea. They may not even realize they’re exhibiting symptoms, but one of the most common is signs of aging. Whether it’s you or a loved one who may be dealing with this type of situation, read on to learn what to look for and how professional help can ensure you start getting the rest you need.

How Does Sleep Apnea Affect Age?

According to a study performed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, researchers discovered age acceleration among individuals who suffer from sleep apnea. What this means is that if a person’s biological age is higher than chronological age, they’re more likely to experience “fast aging.”

Epigenetic age acceleration, as the researchers refer to it, is when the biological age is higher than the chronological. Since it is “a DNA methylation-based marker of fast biological aging,” it can be attributed to different factors and habits that an individual practices daily.

The study looked at 622 adults. The average age was 69 with more than half being women. What they found was that females were more like to experience age acceleration. More research is required to determine why.

What Symptoms Indicate Sleep Apnea?

Although you or someone you love may appear more tired each day, you may not think about the possibility of it being caused by sleep apnea. Knowing the symptoms associated with this condition is essential if you want to avoid age acceleration and other harmful health-related disorders.

Be sure to look out for:

  • Loud snoring
  • Chronic daily fatigue
  • Drowsy driving
  • Having a sore throat or being hoarse
  • Moodiness
  • Inability to focus/forgetfulness
  • Loss of libido
  • Frequent headaches

Can Age Acceleration Be Reversed with Sleep Apnea Treatment?

Yes, it is believed that effective and persistent sleep apnea treatment can slow down signs of age acceleration.

Researchers at the University of Missouri School of Medicine administered a study that found those who received CPAP treatment experienced a slower rate of aging than those who did not undergo treatment.

Whether it is with a CPAP device or oral appliance, the pursuit of sleep apnea treatment can lower one’s risk, which is good news for anyone who may be struggling to achieve daily rest.

Maintain confidence in your appearance by choosing to seek professional help for your sleep apnea symptoms. Doing so will not only improve the quality of your rest but also enhance the way you look and feel about yourself.
